WHO

Who are you?

My name is May-Lill Thorkelsson, born in Norway in 1964. I am a curious person that likes to learn new things. That curiosity has led me to always search for knowledge. I am a professional carpenter and have a Master’s degree in Science Education. Creativity has been enjoyed through dance, writing, and painting – and still are.

Who are your favourite artists?

Alex Kelly from Birmingham, Leif Nyland and Edvard Munch from Norway, Picasso, Hockney, and Van Gogh.

What themes does your art focus on?

I am in search of beauty in everyday life, and new ways to express myself. Sometimes I like to put politics on the edge.

What is your hallmark as an artist?

Everything is already created, I only re-create what exists already. When I paint a flower, the flower in front of me has its own life, I only paint what I can see and convey, through my own glasses.

What music or other audio do you listen to while you work?

When painting, I listen to my inner self, no artificial sounds from outside.

WHEN

When did you decide that art was part of you and your life?

All humans are born creative. I needed to express myself and therefore searched for different ways of doing that; through Art Education, dancing, and teaching.

WHERE

Where do you work on your artwork?

Mostly, I work in my studio at home. Sometimes I paint a plein air and make sketches outdoor, and even paint what I see through my window.

Where would you like to see your artworks exhibited?

Anywhere, where people can enjoy.

WHY

Why do you make art?

I paint because I like to express my views and ideas. Every human being sees things and understands things in their own way, why not share it – for the benefit of all?

Why do you think art is important in our society?

Pieces of Art become visual to the people watching. Some pieces hit your eyes, talk to your heart, and connect to your own inner creativity.

This becomes a dialogue without words. It can bring manifold feelings and open the mind of the viewer. Our everyday lives get a crack where the light can enter.
