Interview with Anne Ihalmo

Anne Ihalmo (Finland) talks to us about her art, answering 10 questions, using the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When, Why).

Through art, I make visible the inner dialogue with myself and the world.

WHO

Who are you?

I am a visual artist from Northern Finland. Digital image has been my tool for about 25 years. Multimedia, which combines image, sound and animation, is also my tool.

Who are your favourite artists?

Frida Kahlo, Orlan, Alvar Aalto Finnish architect and designer, Mika Waltari Finnish author, Lene Marie Fossen photographer.

wHAT

What themes does your art focus on?

Sources of my inspiration that I have been working on for years: sexuality, woman’s body, death, religion, myths, mythology.

What is your hallmark as an artist?

My hallmark is probably digital image collages.

What music or other audio do you listen to while you work?

I need silence while I work. Sometimes the sounds of nature can play in the background.

WHEN

When did you decide that art was part of you and your life?

Art has been a red thread that has passed with me through my life.

WHERE

Where do you work on your artwork?

It depends on what theme I work with. However, the final work takes place mainly on my computer, which is my studio. 

Where would you like to see your artworks exhibited?

Probably the internet is the most important tool when reaching the widest possible audience.

WHY

Why do you make art?

I have had an inner need to express myself through images since I was a child. Through art, I make visible the inner dialogue with myself and the world. My artistic approach is related to the inner necessity to speak through my works. People reflect they own experiences through my art. 

Why do you think art is important in our society?

I think that art opens window to humans minds and emotions and it speaks universal language to everyone who wants to listen it
